If you have suffered from toothaches, sensitivity, or abscesses in your mouth, you should schedule an appointment with ATI Dental Care. We can help you restore your smile and avoid costly dental treatments in the future. As a disclaimer, Dr. Kak is a general dentist with specialized training in orthodontics. What Is Root Canal Treatment?

Root canal treatment is a procedure to remove the infected or decayed pulp and nerves of the tooth. The pulp includes the blood vessels, nerves and connective tissues inside the tooth. If these tissues become infected or inflamed, they can cause the tooth to decay, become structurally unsound or break. Even if only partially infected, a tooth may have to be extracted to prevent further damage. Our dentist may recommend a root canal treatment if your tooth has experienced severe damage from decay or injury.

What Are the Causes of Root Canal Infection?

If a cavity is not treated in time, it can lead to an infection of the pulp inside the tooth. The bacteria in plaque can cause inflammation of the pulp and bone cells surrounding it, leading to pain and discomfort.

Tooth decay can cause severe damage to the nerves of the tooth and affect its appearance as well.

Injury can also lead to infection and discomfort in the mouth.

What Happens During Root Canal Therapy?

At first, we will prepare you for your procedure by making you feel comfortable with local anesthesia. Then, we will make a series of small holes in your tooth to access the infected area and clean it thoroughly using high-level disinfectants.

Once this is over, we will refill the root canal with a sealing material. You will be asked to bite on a piece of gauze or rubber after this procedure to keep your teeth clean while they heal. To ensure that no contamination gets into your newly cleaned teeth, we will prescribe antibiotics as well.

When Should I Get Treated for a Root Canal Infection?

If you have any of these symptoms that could be signs of root canal infection:

  • Severe pain in your tooth that does not subside even after taking painkillers
  • Sensitivity to hot and cold foods
  • A change in the color or shape of your tooth
  • A lump near your infection site
  • A bad smell coming from your mouth
  • Pus discharge from your gum line
  • A fever accompanied by pain and fever
