Treating Conditions Related to Teeth, Jaws and Gums

Oral surgery is a set of mouth-related surgical procedures performed on the teeth, jawbone, gums and soft tissues of the mouth. Oral surgery procedures help in treating conditions related to the teeth, jaws and gums.

For instance, when a person has a damaged or decayed tooth that is beyond the reach of restorative treatment, the dentist will determine whether to treat it or extract it. In this case, oral surgery is required to extract the tooth.

As a disclaimer, Dr. Kak is a general dentist with specialized training in implants. She is not a licensed oral surgeon. Call ATI Dental Care to schedule an appointment.

Types of Oral Surgery

  • Dental implant surgery
  • Bone grafting
  • Wisdom tooth extraction
  • Extraction of teeth
  • Gum surgery
  • Removal of cyst or tumor
  • Orthognathic surgery

Dental Implant Surgery

One of the most common types of oral surgery is dental implant surgery. Dental implants are titanium posts that are surgically placed into your jawbone in place of your missing tooth. After this process, a denture or a permanent bridge can be attached to the implants.

Bone Grafting

Bone grafting is another type of oral surgery performed when you suffer from jawbone loss due to tooth loss or other reasons. The procedure helps in replacing the missing jawbone with healthy bone tissue from other parts of your body.

Wisdom Tooth Removal

Wisdom tooth extraction is an oral surgical procedure performed on people who have erupted their wisdom teeth. If a wisdom tooth doesn't erupt properly or gets impacted due to some other reason, it may cause pain in the jaws and surrounding teeth. To avoid this scenario, oral surgery is suggested to remove the impacted tooth from its socket.

Extractions

In some cases, an extraction may be needed to remove an infected or damaged tooth from your mouth. It may also be necessary if you have too many teeth in one jaw and require space for orthodontic treatments.

Gum Surgery

A gum graft procedure is performed to help replace damaged or diseased gum tissue with healthy tissue taken from other parts of your body or another human donor's tissue. If you get gingivitis, the treatment begins with a gum graft procedure so that all the diseased gum tissue can be removed and healthy tissue can be grafted back into its place.

Removal of Cyst or Tumor

Oral surgery procedures may also be performed to remove cysts and tumors from the soft tissues of your mouth. Laser technology is used to perform this type of surgery without leaving any kind of scarring in your mouth.

Orthognathic Surgery

Orthognathic surgery involves moving your teeth back into place if they are misaligned or need correction for an abnormal bite. This type of oral surgery may also involve extracting one or more teeth that are causing space issues in your mouth.
